Reading aloud to improve PSLE Chinese

We’ve been helping thousands of students ace PSLE Chinese over the last 10 years, and from experience, the single best improvement is reading aloud sentences and passages.

Indeed, University of Waterloo research shows reading words aloud makes them significantly easier to remember compared to reading silently due to the “production effect“, where hearing the sounds we produce helps to doubly reinforce the material.

This is particularly important for Chinese, since it’s a non-phonetic language (i.e., you can’t sound out a word, unlike English). When you read silently, your brain tends to subconsciously skip unknown words, but this isn’t good. You want to confront unknown words in June rather than in Sept/Oct during the actual exams.

At VocabKing, our goal is to help your child improve oral and vocab as quickly as possible. That’s why we’re excited to introduce two new features that make reading aloud even more effective.

Custom Materials: Practise your own materials

Picture this. Your child is struggling with Chinese comprehension homework because there are a number of unknown words. He or she rushes to complete it without checking a dictionary, as it’s too much of a chore. The result: your child isn’t actually learning, and if the forgotten words appear in the WA or PSLE, he or she will make the same mistakes.

And the reality is that many parents, especially P6 parents, have a lot of materials from your school, enrichment classes, or tutors. The problem is that students don’t use them.

Our Custom Materials tool solves both problems.

Practise with Custom Materials and get real-time feedback using VocabKing’s AI oral tools.

You can now upload or take a picture of any Chinese material via our Custom Materials tool. Your child’s homework worksheet. A newspaper article. A model essay (作文范文). Once uploaded, the material becomes a powerful learning tool with three key capabilities.

First, students can practise reading the material aloud using our speech recognition system. Our engine listens as they read and provides real-time feedback on their pronunciation.

Second, they can click on any word to see its meaning and pinyin instantly, making comprehension homework significantly easier.

Third, our AI generates audio read-aloud after your child has attempted the text, so he or she can hear the correct pronunciation and improve.

For students looking to improve writing, try using the Custom Materials tool. It’s nigh impossible to get students to write a composition a day. But it’s much easier to get them to read one model essay every day. You simultaneously practise your oral (the passage portion is worth 20 marks in PSLE), and also absorb good vocab (好词佳句) that can be used for compos. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

VocabKing read-aloud tool analysing Chinese pronunciation, fluency and tone from uploaded materials

Our reading intelligence tool analyses your child’s reading. Compare it with our AI recording to improve fluency, tone, and pronunciation instantly.

Reading Intelligence: Actionable insights from read-aloud

Our new Reading Intelligence tool analyzes all your speech pronunciation history to identify known words and potential vocab gaps.

Let’s say your child pronounced 龙虾 correctly and confidently in a number of sentences like “我喜欢吃龙虾” and “妈妈带我去吃龙虾”. This means he or she likely can recognise the word. While recognition doesn’t guarantee you understand its full meaning (we test that separately), we deprioritise testing these words for recognition, allowing for more efficient revision.

Every night, our AI engine looks for patterns in what your child read earlier in the day. Which words did they pronounce confidently and accurately? Which ones caused them to stumble? We then build a detailed picture of their vocabulary strengths and weaknesses.

Meanwhile, if your child constantly mispronounces certain characters, the Reading Intelligence tool flags them for priority attention, pushing them to the front of the queue in our Daily Challenge and Pet Game modes. This allows your child to focus on weaknesses more efficiently.

This is critical with just 3 months to PSLE – efficient revision is everything when time is limited.

How These Features Work Together

The real magic happens when Custom Materials and Reading Intelligence work together.

Firstly, your child uploads material like comprehension or model essays, and reads them aloud. Our Reading Intelligence tool identifies which vocab is known and which requires more attention, ensuring important words appear more frequently throughout VocabKing.

So let’s say your child uploads and practises their school passage about environmental protection (环保). Our AI notices he or she is struggling with words like 污染 and 保护环境, and orders them to appear prominently in their Daily Vocab Challenge. Your child is constantly tested until he or she gets it!

Help your child ace Chinese today!

The research is pretty clear: reading aloud accelerates language learning in ways that silent reading simply cannot match. These two new features ensure that every reading session your child does becomes more targeted, more effective, and more personalised to their specific needs.
